Object Name Directory, Telephone
Title The Speaking Telephone!
List of Subscribers connected with the Central Office System
Scope & Content Telephone directory entitled "The Speaking Telephone! List of Subscribers connected with the Central Office System, Detroit, September 15, 1878." The directory is 8 pages in length and is printed in black text on slightly yellowed paper. Subscriber's names are listed alphabetically on three pages and the remaining pages show the names of various advertisers. Printed text on the second page indicates that the pages are replicas of the first telephone directory that was used in Detroit. Possibly, the directory was printed for advertising or celebration purposes by the "Telephone Pioneers of America, Wolverine Chapter Number 10," whose name is superimposed over a portion of the text on the directory cover page. (The Telephone Pioneers was an employee social and volunteer service club that was sponsored by Michigan Bell Telephone Company.)
